Tierra de Leyendas Review

Maia Muriel and Sebastian Garcia Cosoleto met while working at the Marriott in Buenos Aires. They married and traveled the world before opening Tierra de Leyendas in Ushuaia, a hotel that caters to hedonists, foodies, and coastal walkers. Sebastian's experience as a trained chef and Maia's background in the hotel business go to good use here. You can immediately understand how their delightful establishment quickly gained a reputation as one of the best boutique hotels in Argentina, if not South America. The entire bottom floor is open plan, comprising a lounge room, restaurant, and reception with huge windows overlooking the bay. A rust-colored sofa contrasts nicely with olive walls and corn-yellow staircase. The attention to detail is incredible; they comb the sheepskin seat covers every day, and deliver with breakfast every morning a little note explaining a local anecdote (this is what the legends in the hotel's name refers to). The dining room tables are mini-museum exhibits, with indigenous arrowheads and flints beneath the glass dining surface. The five rooms are all named after a local fable. Ask for the Los Yamanas room, with its stunning view and incredibly relaxing, giant hot tub. The small restaurant is open to the public Monday to Saturday, so if you do decide to lodge elsewhere, at least book a table here to experience Sebastian's excellent cooking. Like others here (Las Yamanas, Los Cauquenes) the hotel is on the outskirts of town. It's a $4 (£2.70) taxi ride into town.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
