Since 1896, this restaurant has been the popular hangout for poets, intellectuals, and musicians, who come for late-night chorrillanas, a Valparaíso specialty of steak, eggs, onions, and french fries tossed together and heaped on a platter. Crusty old waiters in black jackets and bow ties serve typical Chilean seafood fare and grilled meats, as well as their other specialty: vino arreglado, or "fixed" wine with strawberry, peach, or chirimoya (custard apple). But let me be honest, the fare here is really mediocre; you're here for the atmosphere, not the quality of the food, so stick with a snack and cocktails, and plan to visit on weekends when tango singers serenade diners.
