Frommer's Review
This top-starred restaurant is a gem -- painstaking in preparation, arty in presentation, and yet completely unfussy in atmosphere. Raincity Grill was one of the very first restaurants in Vancouver to embrace the "buy locally, eat seasonally" concept, and in 2006, it won the Vancouver magazine award for "Best Regional Restaurant." The menu focuses on seafood, game, poultry, and organic vegetables, all of it from British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. The room is long, low, and intimate -- perfect for romantic dining. To sample a bit of everything, I recommend the seasonal tasting menu, a bargain at C$60 (US$51/£27), or C$89 (US$76/£40) with wine pairings. One recent tasting menu included organic chicken leg with Yukon potato confit; roasted Berkshire pork belly with sunroot and candied kabocha squash; duck breast with braised endive, beets, and celeriac; and fennel seed and honey panna cotta -- all of it made with ingredients found within 161km (100 miles) of the restaurant. The wine list is huge and, in keeping with the restaurant's philosophy, sticks pretty close to home. From May through Labour Day, Raincity opens a takeout window on Denham Street, where you can get a gourmet sandwich, salad, and sweet to go for C$10 (US$8/£4.50).
