The Beach House offers a panoramic view of English Bay from its waterfront location. Diners on the heated patio get more sunshine, but they miss out on the rich interior of this restored 1912 teahouse. The food is consistently good -- innovative, but not so experimental that it leaves the staid West Van burghers gasping for breath. Appetizers include soft-shell crab tempura with salt-and-fire jelly; spicy calamari with ginger; and a salad of crab, shrimp, avocado, and tomato. Entrees have included espresso-crusted pork tenderloin with risotto, pan-fried halibut with artichoke purée, and grilled prawns and scallops. The wine list is award-winning.
