Frommer's Review
This dashing Yaletown restaurant opened in May 2004 and quickly became a culinary and people-watching spot of note. The dining room is a handsomely designed affair with two levels, lots of light wood, and a special "community table" around an induction cooking surface, so lucky diners can watch chef Jeremy Atkins prepare their culinary teasers. The concept at Coast is to offer an extensive variety of fresh (and nonendangered) seafood from coasts around the world. For starters you might have Ahi tuna sashimi and avocado salad, or a wild, white sea tiger prawn cocktail. Then, from the grill, you could order Hawaiian Ahi tuna, wild B.C. salmon, Indian Ocean tiger prawns, or hand-harvested scallops from Newfoundland. Other temptations might include Alaskan king crab gnocchi, garlic tiger prawns and capellini pasta, and (always) Liverpool-style fish and chips. Or, for a reasonably priced splash, try the signature seafood platter (C$68/US$58/£31) with lobster, mussels, crab roll, crab cocktail, prawns, oysters, and smoked salmon. The cooking is just right for every dish, never overdone or underdone, never overwhelming the fish, and a joy for the taste buds. Accompany your meal with a recommended wine from Coast's large cellar.
