Jules, which opened in February 2007, is one of those places that is hard not to like. Like Salt, this casual French bistro is part of a mini-Renaissance putting new life into Gastown. Jules can be really loud, but the staff is friendly and the food is honest, unpretentious, and very reasonably priced. The menu's limited to just a few standard bistro items, all of them well prepared: steak frites (rib-eye or hanger steak with french fries), cassoulet, braised lamb shank, steamed mussels, or a vegetarian shepherd's pie. You can start with classics like French onion soup, escargots in garlic and herb butter, or country-style pâté.
