In Neiafu
On a bluff overlooking Port of Refuge and next door to the Paradise International Hotel, The Sovereign Residence (tel. 70-725; gray_tinley@yahoo.com) is a former home of the king's sister, Princess Salote Mafile'o Pilolevu Tuita. It's now a bed-and-breakfast and by-reservation-only restaurant. Princess Pilolevu's old bedroom has a Jacuzzi, while her daughter's room does not. Neither has a telephone.
On 'Utungake Island
Roads and causeways link Neiafu to 'Utangake Island, 8.8km (5 1/2 miles) south of Port of Refuge. The establishments below sit beside a lovely narrow channel, giving guests their own swimming beach and jumping-off point for scuba diving, kayaking, and other watersports.
Offshore Resorts
Several islets out in the lagoon have small establishments with restaurants and bars frequented by yachties, who drop anchor and go ashore for some food and libation. Among them are Blue Lagoon Resort (tel. 71-300; bllagoon@kalianet.to); Ika Lahi International Gamefishing Lodge (tel. 70-611; www.tongafishing.com); Mala Island Resort (tel. 71-304; www.malaislandresort.com); and Treasure Island Resort (tel. 12-935; www.treasureisland-vavau.com).
