Hotel Gritti Palace Review

Although there are arguably more chichi hotels along the bacino off St. Mark's Square, if you're going for luxury status and the classiest hotel on the Grand Canal, the Gritti has been it for decades. It was the 16th-century palace of Doge Andrea Gritti, whose portrait graces one of the antiques-filled lounges, and everyone who is anyone has stayed here over the centuries, from international royalty to captains of industry, literary giants, and rock stars. Rooms have inlaid antique furnishings, gilt mirrors, ornate built-in dressers hand-painted in 18th-century Venetian style, tented curtains over the tall windows, and real box-spring beds set into curtained nooks. Many rooms have connecting doors so that families can share. Three of the suites on the piano nobile overlook the Grand Canal from small stone balconies; three more suites overlook the campo. Three junior suites open onto a side canal, with walk-in closets and one-and-a-half bathrooms.

Facilities:
Venetian/Mediterranean/international restaurant; bar; babysitting; concierge; room service; smoke-free rooms; courtesy water taxi (free hourly boat to the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido in summer); Wi-Fi

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
