Hotel Bauer Review

Don't let the modern lobby throw you. This inn, just a few blocks from Piazza San Marco, is one of the top deluxe hotels in town and the only one not owned by a large chain. That means Francesca Bortolotto Possati, the chairman, chief executive, and sole owner of the Bauer Hotel Group, and her attentive staff are more likely to give you personal attention. In 1998, a massive hotel restructuring divided the hotel into two parts: the rather disappointing (especially at these prices) 1950s Hotel Bauer, with its standardized rooms and terrace on a side canal, and the Bauer il Palazzo. This 19th-century palace on the Grand Canal behind the modern wing enjoys views of Santa Maria della Salute across the way. The Palazzo is aiming for boutique-hotel status, with a more intimate reception area, a restaurant opening onto a terrace thrust over the Grand Canal, walk-in closets, and antique Venetian style (genuine 18th-c. wherever possible). The higher the price, the classier the accommodations, with patterned chipped-stone floors, elaborate stuccoed walls and ceilings, engraved mirrors, frescoed bedroom ceilings, and marble bathrooms.

Facilities:
2 Venetian/Mediterranean restaurants; 2 bars; babysitting; concierge; fitness center; Jacuzzi; room service; sauna; spa; smoke-free rooms; executive-level rooms (the Palazzo suites)

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
