British author John Ruskin holed up here in 1876 when penning The Stones of Venice (you can request his room, no. 2, but good luck getting it), and this hotel on the sunny Zattere in the southern Dorsoduro has remained a quasi-sacred preference for writers, artists, and assorted bohemians. You can imagine their horror when a recent overhaul was announced. Luckily, it was executed quite sensitively, with the third-generation owners even refusing to add TVs. Half the unfussy but luminous rooms overlook the Giudecca Canal in the direction of Palladio's 16th-century Redentore. The outdoor floating terrace and the rooftop terrace are glorious places to begin or end the day. Three suites and two apartments were added in 2002.
