Albergo al Gambero ReviewMidway along a main strip connecting Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge, this was once a budget hotel, but after a full renovation, it now caters to a slightly better-heeled crowd. Surrounded by striped damasklike bedspreads and curtains, you can slumber in one of the 14 canal-side rooms (5 have bathrooms, including no. 203, which also has a small balcony). Rooms on the first two floors have higher ceilings, though upstairs rooms are more newly renovated. The entire hotel is nonsmoking. By Venice standards, the budget-level Gambero has all the trappings of a midscale hotel at moderate prices. Guests receive a 10% discount in the lively ground-floor Bistrot de Venise. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
