Frommer's Review

Those lucky enough to get a room at this weathered, though elegant, 16th-century palazzo will find simple accommodations in a charming foresteria, the name given to religious institutions that traditionally provided lodging for pilgrims and guests. Affiliated with Italy's Waldesian and Methodist churches, the palazzo often fills the large, recently overhauled, dormitory-style rooms with visiting church groups, though everyone is warmly welcomed, and you'll find an international and inter-religious mix here. Each of the plainly furnished rooms in this once-noble residence opens onto a balcony overlooking a quiet canal. The 18th-century frescoes that grace the high ceilings in some doubles (including corner room no. 10) and two of the dorms are by the same artist who decorated the Correr Civic Museum -- and these rooms will cost you a few euros extra. The two apartments, complete with kitchen facilities, are the best budget choices in town for traveling families of four or five. (Be aware that guests staying in private rooms or apartments are required to stay at least 2 nights; those staying in dormitories can stay just 1.) The reception is open daily from 9am to 1pm and 6 to 8pm. The entire hotel is nonsmoking.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
