Hotel Fontana ReviewThree generations of Stainers have been behind the front desk here since 1968 (for the 30 years prior to that, the Fontana was a convent for German nuns), and their warmth seems to pour out of the lobby's leaded-glass windows. The four-story hotel offers a pensione-like family atmosphere coupled with a crisp, professional operation. Rooms have lovely antique furnishings but a decided lack of wattage in the overhead lights; the two best on the upper floor have private terraces. The hotel installed an elevator in 2009 that whisks you up to the top for beautiful views of San Zaccaria's 15th-century façade. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
