Three generations of Stainers have been behind the front desk here since 1967 (for centuries prior to that, the Fontana was a convent for Austrian nuns), and their warmth seems to pour out of the lobby's leaded-glass windows. The four-story hotel offers a pensione-like family atmosphere coupled with a crisp, professional operation. Rooms have lovely antique furnishings but a decided lack of wattage in the overhead lights. The choice two on the upper floor have private terraces. There's no elevator, but those who brave the climb to the top floors are compensated by views of San Zaccaria's 15th-century facade.
