Frommer's Review
The Guerrato is as reliable and clean a budget hotel as you're likely to find at these rates. Brothers-in-law Roberto and Piero own this former pensione in a 13th-century convent and manage to keep it almost always booked (mostly with Americans). The firm mattresses, good modernish bathrooms, and flea-market finds (hand-carved antique or Deco headboards and armoires) show their determination to run a top-notch budget hotel in pricey Venice. They don't exaggerate when they call their breakfast, accompanied by classical music, buonissimo. The Guerrato is in the Rialto's heart, so think of 7am noise before requesting a room overlooking the marketplace (with a peek down the block to the Grand Canal and Ca' d'Oro). Piero and Roberto have also renovated the building's top floor (great views; no elevator, 70 steps) to create five new rooms -- with air-conditioning (for which you will pay 10€/$13 more).
Roberto also rents (2-night minimum) two lovely, fully equipped apartments between San Marco and the Rialto. The one-bedroom is 120€ to 130€ ($150-$163) for two or 180€ to 200€ ($225-$250) for four (though it would be cramped), while the much larger two-bedroom (on three levels) goes for 180€ to 200€ ($225-$250) for four.
