The royal library of the Habsburgs dates from the 14th century, and the library building, developed on the premises of the court from 1723 on, is still expanding to the Neue Hofburg. The Great Hall of the present-day library was ordered by Karl VI and designed by those masters of the baroque, the von Erlachs. The complete collection of Prince Eugene of Savoy is the core of the precious holdings. With its manuscripts, rare autographs, globes, maps, and other historic memorabilia, this is among the finest libraries in the world.
