This increasingly well-known restaurant lies beside the main street of the hamlet of Schützen, about 25 miles southeast of Vienna. In a 200-year-old maison bourgeoise with a quintet of tastefully rustic dining rooms, self-taught chef and owner Wazlter Eselböck (Austrian Chef of the Year in 1995) prepares artful, idiosyncratic cuisine.

The menu items change according to the season and Eselböck's whim. Expect a meal that's more sophisticated and upscale than anything else in the region. Dishes might include a salad of marinated salmon trout and eel, Asian-style corn soup with sweetwater crab, and Austrian Angus steak served with mushrooms and butter-enriched mashed potatoes with fresh truffles.
