Opera is sacred in Vienna -- when World War II was over, the city's top priority was the restoration of the heavily damaged Staatsoper. With the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in the pit, the leading opera stars of the world perform at the legendary opera house. In their day, Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler worked as directors. Daily performances run from September 1 until the end of June. Tickets are hard to get but worth the effort.
