Frommer's Review
It's a shame this 1934 landmark hotel has stubbornly refused to renovate its interiors given its lovely, whitewashed stone exteriors. The staff is friendly and helpful and offers complete services, but the stale lobby, dark hallways, and worn furniture reveal that the glory days of the O'Higgins are over. There have been a few band-aid repairs like new lighting and the unveiling of the hotel's original parquet floors (after ripping out the hotel's seriously dismal carpeting), but it still lacks that oomph that it so desperately needs. The hotel is located on bustling Plaza Vergara downtown, and is close to the Quinta Vergara Park. Rooms are spacious, just drab, with average-quality beds and bathrooms that feature clunky original fixtures. Ask to see a few rooms if possible, as quality varies from room to room, and those facing the main plaza are in better shape than side rooms.
