Housed in a Victorian house dating to 1905, perched high atop Cerro Castillo, the Offenbacher has sweeping views of the city and the hills beyond, and a splendid glass-enclosed patio. It is by far one of the more interesting and best value places to lodge, and its location on this historic hill puts you near some of the city's oldest homes -- a delightful location, but guests must either grab a taxi to reach the beach, or hoof it. The mix-and-match decor is on the funky side, but it's hard to balk at the flea market furniture when you consider the panoramic views. Superior doubles are worth the extra $10 (£5) for better views and substantially more space. Their three doubles that open onto the patio are darker and less private. The German-Chilean family that runs the Offenbacher is cheerful, helpful, and always on hand to provide comprehensive information on cultural tours and activities throughout the region.
