Frommer's Review
Whereas the Sheraton is nouveau riche, the Hotel del Mar is regal -- think Monte Carlo -- and it is the city's top choice for travelers seeking to splurge. Nestled in the heart of the action near restaurants and shops and fronting the beach, the hotel is adjacent to the historic, 1930s-era casino. Although the hotel was built in 2003, architects performed a superb job of preserving the casino's elegant Greco-Roman style and its lovely flower gardens that surround the property. When compared to similar hotels in the U.S., the del Mar is a bargain for its luxurious accommodations, bend-over-backward service, and spectacular glass-enclosed indoor pool with Roman pillars and panoramic views of the ocean. Guest rooms are tastefully decorated in neutral tones of gray, chocolate, and mahogany; standard and deluxe rooms are on the north and south ends of the hotel with city/sea views, while suites are in the center, offering a wide-open view of the sea. All rooms have balconies. There is an on-site spa and, with the casino on-site, you don't have to go far for nightlife. The city's best restaurant, Savinya is here, too. Note that weekend rates are $30 to $40 (£15-£20) higher than weekdays.
