Built to resemble a ship moored to the shore, this offbeat hotel has been a Viña institution since 1936. The hotel's location perched above the coastline affords views of the pounding surf from all of its 25 rooms, which cantilever out over the ocean. Balconies afford prime viewing territory for the rich profusion of birdlife and sea lions. Inside, the nautical theme continues, with narrow halls with wood-paneled walls and brass handrails; the low-slung rooms look and feel much like a ship's berth. On the downside, potential irritations do lurk beneath the hotel's overarching coziness. The hot water can be sporadic and the hotel's age clearly shows in its worn furnishings; the carpet could stand to be replaced and some rooms reek of smoke (ask for a nonsmoking room). Still, it's an overall welcoming and clean place to spend the night. The beach is a 10- to 15-minute walk away. The restaurant is well known for its superb seafood dishes.
