Built to resemble a ship moored to the shore, this offbeat hotel has been a Viña institution since 1936. The hotel's location perched above the coastline affords views of the pounding surf from all of its 25 rooms. Inside, the nautical theme continues, with narrow halls with wood-paneled walls and brass handrails, and the low-slung rooms look and feel much like a ship's berth. On the downside, the carpet could stand to be replaced, and some rooms reek of smoke, so ask for a nonsmoking room. It's an altogether cozy -- if not wacky -- place to spend the night. Consider spending the extra $20 (£10) or so for a more spacious junior suite. The beach is a 10- to 15-minute walk away.
