Safari Island Lodge ReviewThis eclectic property beside Mile Long Beach, on Nananu-I-Ra's windswept eastern side, is the creation of Warren Francis, an avid Australian windsurfer who also owns Ellington Wharf Water Sports Activity Center. Consequently, about 60% of his guests come here to wind- or kite-surf. During my visit, he was building two lodges up on the hill above the resort to accommodate such groups. Each of these will have one private room with its own bathroom plus several dorm beds as well as a communal kitchen and a large veranda to take advantage of views across Bligh Water to Vanua Levu. Meantime, tin-roof beachside and oceanview bures suitable for couples have hardwood floors, front porches, and their own bathrooms. All the showers here have hot water. Bure windows are not screened, but mosquito nets hang over each double bed. Meals are served in the main house; it's across a lawn from the beach and has a large guest lounge with TV and DVD player. Narrow stairs lead up to a dorm that opens to a porch. Life is much livelier here than at Charlie's, Betham's, and Macdonald's. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
