You'll be spoiled for choice here. This region is one of the best in the country when it comes to terrific accommodations. There are over 100 self-contained cottages alone, most of them cute as buttons. There are endless numbers of homestays and several top-quality upmarket options as well. The visitor center has two excellent booklets, A Taste of Greytown and Martinborough Accommodation.

In Greytown, you'll find four delightful rooms at Westwood, 82 West St. (www.westwood.greytown.co.nz; tel. 06/304-8510), priced from NZ$250 to NZ$350. In addition, the lovely three-bedroom Cherry Cottage sits in Westwood's garden and sleeps six. Parehua Country Estate, New York Street, Martinborough (www.parehua.co.nz; tel. 06/306-8405), has 28 gorgeous new cottages and villas set on 2 hectares (5 acres) of parklike grounds. They have all the mod-cons and an outdoor pool, restaurant, bar, tennis courts, free Wi-Fi throughout the property, and rental bikes complete the picture. Rates are very reasonable, from NZ$300 for the simplest cottages to NZ$675 for a villa. Also in Martinborough, the Peppers Martinborough Hotel, The Square (www.peppers.co.nz; tel. 06/306-9350), is an old, restored beauty, a favorite weekend spot with Wellingtonians, and a fine place to base yourself for vineyard exploration. There are nine units in the charming main hotel building (my preference are the Riddiford and Weld) and seven luscious new (and bigger) rooms in the garden courtyard (opt for the Barton or Sheko). Amenities include a restaurant, two bars, Wi-Fi, and nearby golf. Rate range from NZ$320 to NZ$385.

The 15% GST is included in the rates listed.
