There are plenty of places to eat in Wanaka. Sargoods Restaurant, Edgewater Resort (tel. 03/443-8311), serves remarkably good international cuisine from an a la carte menu with main courses priced from NZ$32. You’ll find excellent picnic foods (and light meals) at Ardmore Street Food Company, 155 Ardmore St. (tel. 03/443-2230); and you’ll always get great pizzas, pasta, and atmosphere at the Cow, Post Office Lane (tel. 03/443-4269), which is open daily from noon to midnight. Post Office Lane, off Ardmore Street near the Post Office (www.goodbars.co.nz), is a small, well -- designed cluster of bars and restaurants that is worth seeking out if you want to socialize with locals and international travelers alike. They all open onto a big courtyard complex with a roaring fire and outdoor tables. This is where you’ll find Botswana Butchery, upstairs (tel. 03/443-6745; www.goodbars.co.nz), which specializes in specialty meat cuts cooked to perfection. Take a fat wallet, because it’s the most expensive in town. It has a sister restaurant in Queenstown. Sasanoki Japanese Kitchen, Unit E, Pembroke Mall, 139 Ardmore St. (tel. 03/443-6474), is a great place for a light Japanese lunch or dinner. They’re open Monday through Friday from 11:30am to 9pm and Saturday from 5 to 9pm. Ritual Espresso, 18 Helwick St. (tel. 03/443-6662), is open Monday 8am to 5pm and Tuesday through Sunday 9am to 5pm for very good coffee.
