Visitor Information -- The Bath County Chamber of Commerce, 169 Main St. (P.O. Box 718), Hot Springs, VA 24445 (tel. 800/628-8092 or 540/839-5409; www.discoverbath.com), operates a visitor center (with free Wi-Fi) on Main Street south of The Homestead. It's open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4:30pm. There's an information kiosk in Warm Springs at the Jefferson Pools, on U.S. 220 just south of the Va. 39 junction. It usually has copies of a walking-tour brochure to the little village.

Getting There -- U.S. 220 runs north and south through Hot Springs and Warm Springs, with access to I-64 at Covington, 20 miles of winding mountain road south of Hot Springs. The scenic route is via Va. 39 from Lexington, a 42-mile drive that follows the Maury River through the canyonlike Goshen Pass. You can also take the scenic route from Staunton via Monterey, described earlier in this chapter.

The nearest regular air service is at Roanoke Regional Airport. Clifton Forge has an Amtrak station (tel. 800/872-7245; www.amtrak.com).
