Hotel Warm Springs Bed and Breakfast Inn

This hotel, built in 1907, thrived when the region's economy boomed because of the presence of FDR throughout the war years. Gerrie Thompson, its owner since 1988, can recite a guest list that includes the queen of Mexico; the king and queen of Spain; the president of the Philippines; armies of journalists, Cabinet members, and Secret Service agents -- and a screen legend named Bette Davis. Despite some half-hearted attempts at redecoration, this artfully dowdy period piece from another age evokes the languor and sultriness of the 1940s in the Deep South. Some of the guest rooms contain old-fashioned oak furniture made in the factory Eleanor Roosevelt established in Val-Kill, New York, to relieve unemployment during the Great Depression. Sitting rooms and a high-ceilinged breakfast room are located on the second and third floors. All rooms are nonsmoking.
