Late-Night Bites

Cheap Eats: Happy Hours to Write Home About

Good-value promotions are often available at area bars and nightclubs, such as Whitlow's on Wilson in Arlington, where you can chow down on a half-price burger every Monday, good all day. A step above these are certain restaurants around town that set out tasty bites during happy hour, either free or for an astonishingly low price. Here are three that you might like:

In the bar area only, McCormick & Schmick's, 1652 K St. NW, at the corner of 17th Street NW (tel. 202/861-2233), not far from the White House, order a drink costing $2.50 or more, and you may select from a $1.95, $2.95, or $3.95 bar menu such tasty offerings as oyster shooters, fried calamari, quesadillas, fish tacos, and more. The offer is good Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 7:30pm.

In Georgetown, Morton's Steakhouse, 3251 Prospect St. NW, just off Wisconsin Ave. NW (tel. 202/342-6258), serves up "Power Hour" bar bites, in its Bar 12-21, Monday to Friday, 5 to 6:30pm and 9:30 to 11pm. Drinks are normal price, but the bar bites menu features a variety: cheeseburger trio, four petite filet mignon sandwiches, blue cheese french fries, and so on, each priced at $5 per plate.

In the heart of Dupont Circle neighborhood, at 1343 Connecticut Ave. NW, Café Citron (tel. 202/530-8844) has sweet deals for those with Latino tastes: a range of items, from fried plantains, to fried cheese patties, to Bolivian potato cakes stuffed with beef and cheese, priced between $3 and $7.50. Café Citron's happy hour runs Monday through Friday, 5 to 7pm, and offers special entertainment, such as the flamenco show every Monday and live Latin jazz every Tuesday.

South of Café Citron, at 1990 M St. NW, upscale restaurant Vidalia (tel. 202/659-1990) hosts a wine tasting Monday to Friday, 5:30 to 6:30pm, during which the sommelier pours complimentary sips of excellent wines, accompanied by plates of canapés whipped up by the chef.
