Founding Farmers Review

Location, location, location. A voluminous menu that covers every food craving and budget. Artisanal cocktails. Emphasis on organic ingredients and ecofriendly practices. Lots of communal tables. Put it all together and you understand why Founding Farmers is standing-room-only at lunch and dinner. Situated on the first floor of the International Monetary Fund, within walking distance of both the White House and George Washington University, the restaurant fills with international business folks, students, and wonky types all here to loosen up. The first floor, with its central bar surrounded by booths and tables, is always rowdy. You should head to the second floor if you want quiet conversation. The shrimp and grits, the tuna and cabbage entree salad, and the carrot cake dessert are probably the best things on the menu. If you're here for brunch, do try the Banana Fluffer Nutter, which is fresh banana slices topped with homemade marshmallow fluff and Lauren C. Mills's Organic Peanut Butter. (Lauren used to babysit my daughters.)

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
