The Jefferson, Washington, DC Review

Following a 2-year renovation, the Jefferson reopened in August 2009 and less than 6 months later was awarded an esteemed Relais and Châteaux designation, the only D.C. lodging to be recognized by the 58-year-old organization.

Where to start? Exquisitely decorated rooms are done in a variety of pleasing palates, and Jefferson's life and times in Washington, Virginia, and Paris come to life in the decorative details: Precious original artworks recall Jefferson's varied interests; bedcover toile designs depict scenes of Monticello; and soap fragrances are inspired by herbs and botanicals native to Charlottesville. Corner rooms at the front of the house reveal the Washington Monument about a mile away; some rooms look straight down 16th Street to the White House.

Ramble around the first floor in the morning and you may stumble upon the pastry chef emerging from the kitchen with a sheet pan of shortbread, or the bartender setting up for business in the quiet-for-now Quill bar and lounge, or breakfast still under way in the sky-lit, marble-floored Greenhouse, or staff preparing tables for dinner in the jewel-box of a dining room, Plume. The hotel is tranquil during the day but quite lively in the evening, when Quill fills with flirting singletons and Plume's tables are all taken with fine-dining lovers.

The Jefferson's ecofriendly practices include use of a water filtration system and reusable glass bottles. The hotel has five ADA-approved rooms, including one suite. The Jefferson is nonsmoking.

Facilities:
2 restaurants; bar/lounge; children's amenities; concierge; 24-hr. on-site fitness center; spa, including hair salon, massages, and facials; room service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
