Frommer's Review
The Phoenix Park is one of a cluster of hotels across from Union Station and 2 blocks from the Capitol. It's distinguished by its popular and authentic Irish pub, The Dubliner, which attempts to set the tone for the entire property. Because of this well-worn, wood-paneled pub (which offers Irish fare, ale, and live Irish music nightly), and its regular hosting of Ireland-related events in its banquet rooms, the Phoenix Park attracts numerous sons and daughters of Erin and generally conveys an air of Irish hospitality. Recently renovated rooms present three color schemes -- a lovely shamrock-green shade, an elegant gold, and a dusky rose -- each quite attractive, decorated with pretty patterned wallpaper and drapes of the same design at the windows, enclosing a toile-printed sheer curtain. The refurbishment replaced old bedding with pillow-topped mattresses and fat old TVs with 32-inch, high-definition, flatscreen models. For the best views, ask for a room on one of the top floors (the hotel has nine), facing Massachusetts Avenue, toward the North Capitol Street end; you'll overlook the National Postal Museum, a smidgen of Union Station, and congressional buildings. Or book a one- or two-story suite, some of which have kitchenettes, working fireplaces, and spiral staircases. Irish decorative accents include linens and bathrobes, artwork, toiletries, and carpeting. Call direct to the hotel or check the website for best deals.
