Willard InterContinental Washington Review

This is one of D.C.'s finest hotels, and certainly its most historic, having served as temporary home to two presidents (Lincoln in 1861, Coolidge in 1923), and as the setting for many historic events (this is where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote his "I Have a Dream" speech).

Standard-size guest rooms present a handsome decor, heavy on reproduction Federal- and Edwardian-style furnishings. Best are the oval suites overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol and the rooms fronting Pennsylvania Avenue. Courtyard-facing rooms are the quietest.

Stop at the Round Robin Bar for a mint julep (introduced here), and listen to barman Jim Hewes spin tales about previous guests, from Mark Twain to Bill Clinton. The Scotch bar features a vast selection of single-malt whiskeys.

Heads of state, corporate execs, and getaway travelers are among the overnight clientele, but locals are always passing through, whether to sip a cocktail in the Round Robin or applaud the caroling performances staged at Christmas time in the ornate lobby. Any excuse'll do.

Facilities:
Cafe w/seasonal terrace; 2 bars; tearoom; babysitting; children's programs; concierge; thoroughly equipped and luxurious Red Door health club and spa w/steam room, Jacuzzi, and sauna; room service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
