JW Marriott Hotel Washington, DC ReviewA $40-million renovation completed in 2009 transformed this 27-year-old property into a thoroughly modern Marriott. Changes include leather-wrapped columns and flatscreen TV-covered media walls in the atrium lobby, and a plug-in technology panel in each guest room that allows guests to split the TV screen and simultaneously watch TV and check e-mail. The hotel is primely located on Pennsylvania Avenue near theaters, the White House, the National Mall, and restaurants. Ask for a room on floors 3 through 15 facing Pennsylvania Avenue for views of the avenue and of the Washington Monument beyond. Floors 7 and 12 on the Pennsylvania Avenue side have balconies; floors 14 and 15 are the concierge level. Politicos and corporate types fill the hotel on weekdays, families take over on weekends. Like all Marriott properties, this one participates in ecofriendly practices by offering guests carbon offset options, among other things. The entire hotel is nonsmoking. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
