Frommer's Review

You're in a prime location here -- on Pennsylvania Avenue, adjacent to the National Theatre, 1 block from the Warner Theater, 2 blocks from the White House, and within walking distance of the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian museums, and lots of stores and restaurants.

A recently completed $40-million overhaul thoroughly transformed the lobby and jazzed up guest rooms, replacing beds and adding thick mattresses, top-of-the-line linens, seven big pillows, and white duvet comforters, laundered afresh after every guest. Decor now features earth-tone fabrics, cherry furnishings, and chrome-and-glass bathroom fixtures. Each room has a state-of-the-art, 32-inch, LCD HDTV, able to connect with a guest's laptop or iPod. Ask for a room on floors 3 through 15 facing Pennsylvania Avenue for views of the avenue and of the Washington Monument beyond. Floors 7 and 12 on the Pennsylvania Avenue side have balconies; floors 14 and 15 are the concierge level.

Facilities: 2 restaurants (both upscale American); Starbucks; complete health club (w/indoor swimming pool and whirlpool); concierge (morning and evening hours, weekdays only); business center; 24-hr. room service; same-day laundry service; dry cleaning; concierge-level rooms; 15 rooms for those w/limited mobility, 6 w/roll-in shower.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
