Frommer's Review
This classic D.C. hotel is boutique in size and grand in sophisticated ambience. Named to Condé Nast Traveler's 2007 Gold List of the "World's Top 700 Places to Stay," and winner of the magazine's 2007 "Most Excellent Hotel in North America and Canada" award, the Hay-Adams is perhaps best known for its great views and proximity to the White House. The hotel's first floor Lafayette dining room (a favorite place for a sumptuous Sunday brunch) and guest rooms on the sixth through eighth floors on the H Street side of the hotel (or as low as the second floor in winter, when the trees are bare) overlook Lafayette Square, the White House, and the Washington Monument in the background. (Expect to pay more for these guest rooms.) The sight from rooms facing 16th Street isn't bad, either: Windows overlook the yellow-painted exterior of St. John's Episcopal Church, built in 1815, and known as the "church of the presidents."
Built in the 1920s, the Hay-Adams is of Italian Renaissance-style architecture. Many of its original features, such as ornate plaster moldings, ornamental fireplaces, the walnut-paneled lobby, and high-ceilinged guest rooms, are still in place. Each guest room presents an elegant decor of sage green, off-white, beige, and gold toile fabrics; a Bose CD player; custom European linens; marble bathrooms with brass fixtures; individual thermostats; and complimentary wireless Internet access.
The hotel has about 13 one-bedroom suites (the living room and bedroom are separate) and seven junior suites (living room and bedroom are together in one space). Stop in at the Off the Record bar for casual fare at lunch and dinner and the frequent sighting of a big name in the media or administration. The hotel attracts a star-studded clientele as guests, too, so keep your eyes peeled, if you're interested.
Facilities: Restaurant (American); bar; access to local health club ($15 per day); 24-hr. concierge; complimentary morning car service; secretarial and business services; complimentary 24-hr. business center; 24-hr. room service; same-day laundry service; dry cleaning; 9 rooms for those w/limited mobility, 3 w/roll-in showers.
