Swann House Review

Among D.C's stable of wonderful B&Bs, Swann House stands out. The stunning architecture of the 1883 mansion, with its turrets, balcony, and arches, catches the attention of passersby. Inside, the handiwork of owner Mary Ross takes over. Applying her fine eye for interior design and love of textiles, Ross has decorated each of the 12 guest rooms (four are suites) and the public areas in individually beguiling ways, painting walls in rich warm colors and constantly changing out furnishings, from antique beds to pedestal sinks. Manager Rick adds his graciously capable touch, sparking interesting conversations as he sees to guests' needs. (Ask him about his latest trip to Paris.) Hard to say which room is prettiest: the Blue Sky Suite, walls painted blue-gray, with the original rose-tiled working fireplace, queen-size bed, and sitting room? The Il Duomo, with Gothic windows, cathedral ceiling, and angel-muraled walls within the turreted bathroom? The main floor is just as lovely. Check the inn's website for rate specials. This is a no-smoking property.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
