The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C. Review

Doormen greet you effusively when you arrive, and poised young women in the bar swan around, gracefully serving you your cocktail. The Ritz staff is always looking after you.

Some guest rooms overlook the hotel's peaceful landscaped courtyard; rooms on the outside perimeter view the West End's cityscape. Deluxe rooms are spacious (standard guest rooms average 450 sq. ft.) and richly furnished with decorative inlaid wooden furniture, a comfy armchair and ottoman, flatscreen TV, and pretty artwork. Large marble bathrooms offer ample counter space, separate bathtub and shower stall, and the toilet in its own room behind a louvered door. The phone features a button for summoning the "technology butler" (a complimentary, 24/7 service for guests with computer questions). For a $15 fee, guests may use the two-level, 100,000-square-foot Sports Club/LA, the best hotel health club in the city (guests staying on the concierge level receive complimentary access). The hotel's Westend Bistro by Eric Ripert is one of the hottest restaurants in town. The Ritz is nonsmoking.

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar/lounge; concierge; concierge-level rooms; health club and spa (the best in the city); room service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
