Frommer's Review

Museum-like in appearance, the Monaco occupies a four-story, all marble mid-19th-century building, half of which was designed by Robert Mills, the architect for the Washington Monument. The other half was designed by Thomas Walter, one of the architects for the U.S. Capitol. The halves connect seamlessly, enclosing a landscaped courtyard.

Spacious guest rooms measure about 400 square feet and feature vaulted ceilings and long windows hung with charcoal-and-white patterned drapes. Eclectic furnishings include neoclassical armoires and three-legged desks. (The hotel's historic status precludes it from installing closets; hence, the armoires, which some guests say are too small.) Recently re-vamped décor marries gold, espresso, and deep red colors.

Interior rooms overlook the courtyard and the restaurant, Poste; exterior rooms view city sights, the higher up the better. The interior rooms on the first floor are somewhat subterranean (a window close to the ceiling lets in some light). Best rooms are the 32 Monte Carlos, which are nearly twice the standard size, but cost just an extra $30; located on the second and third floors, these rooms have huge windows, letting in amazing light and overlooking great sights. When you stay at the Monaco, you're not just downtown, you're part of the scene.

Facilities:
Restaurant, bar; children's amenity program; concierge; spacious fitness center w/flatscreen TVs; room service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
