Topaz, a Kimpton Hotel Review

The Topaz lies on a quiet residential street whose front-of-the-house windows overlook picturesque town houses. That traditional exterior contrasts with the look you'll find inside: exotica, or at least that's what the designer has in mind. A 2011 guest room revamping is "one part Moroccan Bazaar and one part Le Cirque," according to the designer's statement. So look for headboards gilded with silver leaf and inset with velvet, carved wooden drapery valances, and plentiful use of royal blue and pale green colors. The guest rooms haven't changed shape -- they're still unusually large, averaging 400 square feet, and half have an alcove and a separate dressing room. Topaz is nonsmoking.

Facilities:
Bar/restaurant; babysitting; bikes; children's amenity program; concierge; access to nearby health club ($5 per guest); room service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
