Madera, a Kimpton Hotel Review

The Madera fancies itself a kind of ecoconscious pied-à-terre for travelers. Guest rooms are large, with those on the New Hampshire Avenue side offering balconies and city views. If you have trouble sleeping, ask for a higher-up room on this side, because you're directly over the entrance to the restaurant, Firefly. Or ask for a back-of-the-house room on floors 6 through 10, where views of Rock Creek Park and the Washington National Cathedral can be seen. All rooms are comfortable and furnished with beds whose headboards are giant dark-wood panels inset with a patch of vibrant blue padded mohair. Other distinct touches: pillows covered in animal print or satiny fabrics, grass cloth-like wall coverings, and black granite with chrome bathroom vanities. This Kimpton hotel's specialty rooms include "Snack" rooms (studio with kitchenette and grocery shopping service), "Tranquility" rooms (with personal massage chair), and "Cardio" rooms (with treadmill, exercise bike, or elliptical steps). Madera is nonsmoking.

Facilities:
Restaurant/bar; babysitting; bikes; children's amenity program; concierge; complimentary access to the nearby Gold's Gym; room service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
