Frommer's Review
Three blocks south of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, this hotel made its debut in January 2005. The hotel's proximity to the American Indian museum is significant because four Native American tribes are 49% owners of the hotel, which makes this the first multitribal partnership with nontribal partners on land off a reservation. During the day, you can easily walk to the Indian and other Mall museums, as well as to Capitol Hill; at night, however, this part of town shuts down, and you'll have to travel to other neighborhoods to find restaurants and entertainment.
Hotel features mimic the look of the American Indian Museum; for instance, the Kasota limestone, which covers the museum's exterior, is used throughout the first floor of the hotel. The attractive guest rooms evince a Native American cultural motif through the use of etched wood headboards, artwork, and other design elements. The hotel's enviable site endows it with rare views from certain floors: Rooms on levels 11 through 13, at the back of the building (the side closest to the Mall), as well as some along the 3rd Street side, offer varying and somewhat distant views of the Capitol, the dome of the Indian Museum, and the Washington Monument. The best rooms survey this whole scene, which, it must be said, also includes sights of gray government buildings, construction, and railroad tracks. Metro and freight trains do rumble past here, and if you are on one of the lower floors, especially, you will probably hear them. Rooms with views of the Capitol cost an additional $40 per night.
This Residence Inn, like all Residence Inns, offers some helpful amenities for families and businesspeople who are in Washington for more than just a couple of days: The roomy suites all have fully equipped kitchens, which allows for flexible dining options. Some two-bedroom suites can connect to form a four-bedroom suite. Rates include a generous hot breakfast daily, social hours with dinner buffet Monday through Wednesday, a cookout Wednesday night (seasonally), a dessert buffet every Thursday night, and grocery shopping delivery service. The property has an indoor pool and exercise room; a gift shop, where you can purchase tour tickets; and an on-site Flexcar service, should you want to rent a car while you're here -- make sure you reserve a car when you book your room reservation.
