Frommer's Review
What was once the creaky Governor's House Hotel has been gutted and transformed into the Beacon, which opened in January 2005. Like its predecessor, the Beacon attracts a lively local gathering in its bar and grill, right off the lobby, which adds to the overall genial ambience of the hotel. Rooms offer every configuration imaginable: a penthouse with rooftop terrace, eight one-bedroom suites with fireplaces and great views of the city, 60 corporate quarter junior suites with pantry kitchens, and deluxe rooms. Many rooms have a sofa bed and dining area. All rooms are furnished with flatscreen TVs and contemporary touches, like wide-striped bedcovers and the large leathery-looking headboards framed in wood. The best rooms are in the "turret": the one-bedroom suites, one per floor, that perch in the corner of the building overlooking the intersection of 17th Street and Rhode Island Avenue. But the New York-style junior suites offer a great deal: Each suite's compact kitchen includes a dishwasher, fridge, stovetop, microwave, and cabinets; add the roomy living room with a sleep sofa and you've got a good home base -- for both corporate folks on business and families on holiday. The hotel's 10th-floor Beacon Sky Bar, an open-air, penthouse martini bar, debuted in 2006. The seasonal bar is open Wednesday to Saturday and offers views of the Dupont Circle neighborhood and the boulevards of the city. Keep this spot in mind if you're here for the Fourth of July, since the Sky Bar's perch is prime for watching the fireworks on the Mall.
Facilities: Restaurant (modern and classic American); bar w/indoor atrium and outdoor patio; seasonal rooftop bar; in-house cardio fitness center, plus free access to nearby, fully equipped YMCA w/indoor pool; tour bus stop; 24-hr. business center; room service (6:30am-11pm); same-day laundry service; dry cleaning; 8 rooms for those w/limited mobility, 2 w/roll-in showers.
