W Washington, D.C. Hotel Review

The W wants to blow you away, and it doesn't mess around. P.O.V., its posh, year-round rooftop lounge and terrace, is unique in serving unbeatable views of the White House and the Washington Monument. Its SWEAT fitness center offers similar landmark sights. The hotel claims the capital's only Bliss Spa, known for over-the-top treatments such as "peeling groovy" and "hangover herbie" facials. J&G Wine Bar opens to a sidewalk terrace on Pennsylvania Ave. Renowned Jean-Georges Vongerichten is the chef behind the hotel's sublime J&G Steakhouse.

Guest rooms of varying configurations cross ultramodern, ice-white furnishings with antique accents. Best are those that wrap around the corner of the hotel, where 15th Street meets Pennsylvania Avenue. The grand arches in the "Living Room" (lobby) reach two stories high toward the ornate cornices, a splendid reminder that this structure used to be the historic Hotel Washington. FYI: The Living Room doubles as a DJ and cocktail lounge, much favored by boisterous urbanistas. The W is entirely nonsmoking.

Facilities:
Restaurant; 4 bars; concierge; state-of-the-art, fully equipped fitness center; room service; over-the-top spa with retail store; free Wi-Fi in lobby

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
