Aside from the lodging options listed below, another option in the Kuna Islands is camping, or my favorite, sleeping in a hammock under a couple of palm trees. Despite its tropical location, there are few mosquitoes or other biting insects on the islands, and nights are breezy and cool, making for comfortable sleeping conditions; in fact, you may want to pack a light sweater or blanket. Just ask your boatman to take you to an empty island, and you'll have your own private tropical paradise. You can arrange to have your meals brought to you by boat for an additional price. Remember, however, that there is no electricity or bathrooms, so this option is best for one or two nights. Be sure to get permission from the owner. The most popular islands for camping are Icotupu tel. 299-9074; Isla Pelicano tel. 299-9000; Isla Achutupu tel. 299-9000; and Isla Porvenir tel. 299-9056. Camping can also be set up through your hotel or by contacting Gilberto Alemancia. All hotel options reviewed include three meals a day.
