There are a great number of campgrounds in and around Whitehorse; they represent the best alternative for travelers watching their money.
Tenters will like the Robert Service Campground, South Access Road (tel. 867/668-6678 or 867/668-3721), close to downtown and free of RVs. There are 48 unserviced tent sites, plus fire pits, washrooms, showers, and a picnic area. The rate is C$14 (US$11) per tent. Just north of Whitehorse on the Dawson City road are a number of lakeside territorial parks with campgrounds. At Lake Laberge Park, you can camp "on the marge of Lake Lebarge" with the creatively spelled verses of Robert Service filling your thoughts. There's also camping at Takhini Hot Springs.
Whitehorse has more than 25 hotels, motels, B&Bs, and chalets in and around the downtown area, including a couple opposite the airport. This is far more than you'd expect in a place its size, and the standards are mostly high. If you're on a budget, check out the new Beez Kneez Bakpakers Hostel, 408 Hoge St. (tel. 867/456-2333; www.bzkneez.com) near the south entrance to Whitehorse, with a large deck, full kitchen, and lots of friendly travelers to befriend; bunk accommodations cost C$20 (US$16).
