Norwich Inn ReviewOwner Joe Lavin, a former hotel consultant and executive for the likes of Westin and Marriott, bought the once-dowdy Norwich Inn in 2006, inheriting a place that has gone steadily uphill in the past decade (the previous owners restored the Victorian turret and opened a brewpub, among other changes). Many of the rooms in this historic inn -- parts of which date way back to 1797 -- are furnished with brass and canopy beds; history buffs should opt for one of the 16 comfortable rooms in the main inn, rather than those in the motel-style annex out back where rooms are less expensive. The main building is also allegedly host to one uninvited guest: the ghost of Mary Walker, who (according to local lore) must atone for her sin of selling bootleg liquor at the inn during Prohibition. Perhaps in her memory, the inn operates Jasper Murdock's Alehouse, probably one of America's tiniest breweries, which also serves some mighty good burgers. There's a dining room as well, where President James Monroe, while passing through on horseback, dined in 1817. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
