A Chef's Kitchen ReviewVeteran chef John Gonzales, who has authored two cookbooks and appeared on several TV shows, says he started this fascinating cooking school-cum-restaurant because he "felt sorry for the audiences on the Food Network" who never get to eat the meals they watch being prepared. Here you not only will watch this entertaining chef at work, you will enjoy the fruits of his labors over the course of a 3-hour evening. The restaurant is designed like a culinary classroom, with 25 seats at three tables arranged stadium-style so that all can watch him at the kitchen up front. The one nightly seating begins at 6:30pm with champagne and hors d'oeuvres. Then John prepares and serves at least four more courses, each paired with an inexpensive "great find" wine (available in the gourmet store at the front of the building). The menu changes completely every few weeks but is announced in advance on the restaurant's website. The fixed price includes wine and the tip, making this a good value. Make your reservations as early as possible. John also teaches hands-on daytime classes. Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
