I had been in France and Germany a few months before I visited the Williamsburg Winery's new hotel, and I must say the owners accomplished what they set out to do: Make it seem as if you are staying in Europe. This is especially evidenced by the fountain in the cobblestone courtyard at the center of the old-brick hotel, which seems ancient despite having been built in 2007. The rooms and public areas are loaded with Eurocentric art and other items, including a full set of body armor standing by the lobby fireplace. Named and decorated in the style of various European provinces, the luxurious guest quarters have wood-burning fireplaces. I especially liked the more charming top-floor units with dormer windows. Opening to the outdoor pool, Café Provencal serves breakfast to guests and Mediterranean fare to anyone at dinner. You can walk to Gabriel Archer Tavern at the winery for lunch or dinner.
