Frommer's Review

Nestled in a peaceful setting on beautifully landscaped grounds beside the James River, this luxurious, country club-like resort is the centerpiece of a 2,900-acre residential development. It's one of Virginia's most complete resorts, offering three golf courses, a sports complex with 15 tennis courts, and a full-service spa. The highlight is the world-famous River Course, home of the LPGA Michelob Ultra Open golf championship. Accommodations consist of guest rooms and one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites in gray clapboard buildings overlooking the James River (most expensive), golf-course fairways, or tennis courts. The suites have complete kitchens and living rooms with fireplaces. Daily housekeeping service, including fresh linens, is included. Kingsmill's main dining room offers fine cuisine with a terrific view of the James, while the golf club's steakhouse overlooks the River Course. You can have a snack and sip an Anheuser-Busch cold one down at the marina. Guests can take a complimentary shuttle to Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens Europe.

Facilities:
5 restaurants; 6 bars; indoor and outdoor pools; 3 golf courses; 15 tennis courts; health club; spa; Jacuzzi; sauna; bike rentals; children's programs; concierge; business center; room service; babysitting

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
