In an antique Cape Cod-style farmhouse on Route 100, Le Petit Chef has attracted legions of satisfied customers who flock here to sample Betty Hillman's creative fare. The interior has been updated and modernized at the expense of some historic character, but the quality of the food usually makes diners overlook the made-for-ski-crowds ambience. By all means, start with the signature "Bird's Nest," an innovative mélange of shiitake mushrooms and onions cooked in a cream sauce and served in a deep-fried-potato basket. The main courses include loin of venison with a fruit chutney, and filet of beef with merlot sauce and wild mushrooms.
