The Skyline is a classic knotty-pine, stone-fireplace, tourist-stop restaurant atop a 2,350-foot ridge between Brattleboro and Wilmington. It's the sort of place that seems not to have changed a bit since it opened in 1950 -- and it really hasn't, other than the occasional nose ring on a waitress. The restaurant claims a 100-mile southerly view through its massive plate-glass window; maps on the place mats help you identify the mountains, from Grand Monadnock in New Hampshire to the Berkshires of Massachusetts. One problem: The restaurant is sometimes shrouded in the clouds, which knocks the view down to 100 feet or so. ("Then I'm your view," waitresses often tell customers.) The menu offers basic New England fare (all-you-can-eat pancakes and waffles for breakfast, club sandwiches for lunch, baked sugar-cured ham for dinner) at reasonable prices. Try the rich and tasty Indian pudding for dessert.
