I love this place not so much for its unpretentious sense of style -- the 19th century as interpreted by the 1940s -- but for the way it combines the stately with the quirky. Located on 25 acres of meadow and woodland, the inn feels a bit like one of those British summer estates that P. G. Wodehouse wrote about. Out back are cages filled with game birds, some quite exotic, which are raised for eating, hunting, and show. The guest rooms are designed to satisfy basic comfort more than a thirst for elegance, and some are a bit past their prime. But they're still far from shabby -- and the faded charm is part of the inn's appeal. The dining room is best known for its selection of wines, but the Continental cuisine holds its own quite nicely.
